Unforgettable Rescue: How One Mama and her Litter at the Cusp of a Hurricane Stole our Hearts

Updated: 1 day ago

September 2024 -From our Founder Teri

"We had one hell of a late September. During a transport from Florida to the adoption center in NY, our bus filled with 35 dogs and puppies broke down on the NJ Turnpike. Shortly after we had Hurricane Helene headed our way. Still stuck in NY, I rented a car and drove home.

Guess there was no better time to start collecting strays on my way back. Here's where we meet Helena. She had 10 puppies under someone's porch. They were probably 5 days old and poor momma was a skeleton.

When the clinic opened after the storm, she went to the vet for blood work. We started her on a variety of meds and gave her bags of fluids to help replenish her worn-out body. We truly worried she might die. In the meantime, I started bottle-feeding her 10 puppies while she rested.

Now that she is feeling better, she joins in to help feed the puppies, and sometimes to eat their mush.

Aren't these the most beautiful black golden retriever puppies ever?

Helena is feeling so much better, she went in a squirrel hunt and caught one to bring back to her precious puppies. But there's no need for her to do that... I feed them very well!!"

When Helena and her puppies are reading for adoption they will make the freedom journey to our Great Beginnings Adoption Center in Argyle, NY. Until then they will receive the love and care they need to thrive and become happy, healthy dogs

The Larger Picture

Helena's story goes beyond her individual journey; it represents the urgent need for change in animal welfare. According to recent statistics, approximately 1.5 million shelter animals are adopted in the U.S. each year, yet millions remain in shelters waiting for homes. This reveals a critical gap in awareness and action that needs to be bridged. Educating the public about the importance of spaying and neutering is imperative to these lives at stake.

Our community has a role in promoting animal rescue. Your support can make a world of difference. Every penny donated matters, whether it's $5 or $500. These contributions help provide food, medical care, and shelter for dogs (like Helena and her puppies), in need.

A Call to Action

If you'd like to contribute to Helena and her puppies care, which includes top shelf puppy supplements, food, shelter in a temperature controlled environment, spay and neuter surgeries, vaccinations, preventatives, and fuel for driving them from Florida to NY for adoption, we kindly ask you to consider donating to their FUND HERE.
